Check the temperature of your water heater to make sure your water heater is operating at the most efficient temperature (typically 120 degrees). Turn the faucet to the hottest setting and using a thermometer, check the temperature. If the water is hotter than 120 degrees, follow the manufacturer’s instructions on your water heater to adjust the thermostat(s) accordingly.
Periodically inspect your water meter to monitor for water leaks. Your water meter is typically located at the street near the property line. If there is a leak in the water system you will see a small dial indicator spinning on the water meter.
Check operation of your toilets to ensure the least amount of water usage. If your toilet is running or double flushing, it should be repaired.
Ensure grid strainers are in place in showers and sinks to prevent hair (or jewelry) from going down the drain.
Before vacation turn your water heater to vacation mode. The vacation mode on your water heater is the lowest temperature on the water heater that will keep the pilot light lit. For extended vacations, turn the main water supply off to prevent any major water leaks.
